Glenn McGrath: Pressure Through Control Of Stock Ball

Hello Sir

I’m Shubham, a right arm medium pacer, I am 17 years old. When I bowl in the nets my speed is good and when I bowl on match days it is quite slow. Please sir, tell me how can I bowl fast in the match without any problems.

Hi Shubham, this is a question I get asked quite often, I’m quick in the nets and lose pace in the middle!

An issue that many young bowlers face is having the confidence to bowl quick in the match, the nets offers the security of being able to make mistakes without being punished by being hit for four or six.

So how do we take the confidence of the nets to the middle with us?

You need to develop the skill to control your stock ball, when you are landing this repeatedly you will have deep confidence to run in and bowl quick in matches. This means plenty of practice, I recommended these drills for this young cricketer, they apply to you as well. See this post Cricket Coaching Fast Bowling Tips / How to control where I bowl the ball.

Also, clarify your role with your Captain and Coach, let them know that you want to run in and bowl quick. They can let you know what their expectations are, do they want you to attack or to hold the game ? They can help set a field that allows you to attack relative to the context of the match.
