Cricket Coaching Spin Bowling Tips / How to remedy bowling too slow

by Tahsin
(South Africa)

Respected Sir, I am Tahsin an off spinner and I have some problems with my bowling.
Firstly I lose pace when I bowl, secondly, when I bowl the doosra it doesn’t spin, it turns into a straight ball.
Thirdly, I am very tall, 5.8 feet and 14 years old. Will this have a bad effect on my spin bowling career.

Hi Tahsin, firstly regarding your pace, attack the crease a little more in your run up, the energy you take from your run up will transfer through the ball. Hold your front arm up a little longer and then drive hard through your action, this will help to get more revs on the ball. Spin the ball up and spin it hard!

Secondly, I would be leaving your doosra for the time being, it will effect you developing an orthodox spin bowling action to drift and dip the ball. Work on being sideways on, not chest on, the doosra forces you into a throwing position, which is where you don’t want to be.

Thirdly, tall is good, it helps you to bowl the ball up above the batter’s eyeline which is where you want to bowl. Bowling the ball above the batter’s eyeline forces the batter to look up and then down, which leads to errors in judgement.
