Waqar Younis: The Ultimate Predator

Cricket Coaching Fast Bowling Tips/ How To Bowl The Yorker Like Waqar Younis

Hi Sir,see that link below

I am a 19 year old fast bowler from pakistan, quite inspired by the toe crushing yorkers of Waqar Younus.I know that the above yorker is quite exceptional, but my question for you is how to develop big swing in yorkers?

What I have observed is that if you target 5th stump line with full pace then the ball will automatically come late into the middle stump if it’s swinging, my question for you is what kind of drills you suggest me to develop this kind of yorker.

Hi Kamil, great question and asked about a great bowler. Waqar was the ultimate predatory fast bowler, not only could he blow sides away with his pace, control and hostility; but when he sensed weakness, fear and opportunity he was totally ruthless in exploitng it.

Firstly, ball preparation to get the ball to reverse swing, keep the ball completely dry, polish one side and let the other side deteriorate so that yu can turn the ball around from conventional swing.

Secondly, line, if the ball is really swinging then you need to start it outside off stump to get it to hit the middle stump line.

Thirdly, Waqar and then Shoaib Akhtar used to lower the height of the bowling arm for reverse swing, the ball used to swing incredibly late. I can’t begin to explain the physics of why lowering the arm should make the ball swing so late, but it did!

I think through experimenting and playing with the tape ball you will be able to get a feel for this.

Fourthly, how to bowl the perfect Waqar Younis yorker.

Use the Malinga method, place a target on the crease and when you have warmed up, aim to bowl 24 to 36 yorkers at the target. Do this 1 to 2 times a week.

Keep score of your improvement over time, each session aim to bowl one more.

Repetition is the mother of learning, practice till you have control of it.

Happy Fast Bowling, Coach
